Jenks with a very nice lower Beaverhead Brown taken on a Sally nymph.

Jenks with a very nice lower Beaverhead Brown taken on a Sally nymph.

On August 25 we were back on the Beaverhead floating the section from Henneberry to Grasshopper Creek.  The Beaverhead has fished varying degrees of good to spectacular all year and this trip did not disappoint.  Earlier in the season the fishing was best from High Bridge up stream but recently the fishing has picked up significantly in the lower river.  There is lots of moss in the river which is normal for this time of year but adds a bit of difficulty to the normal nymph fishing technique.  We continue to catch very large fish in the Beav and that trend continued for this trip where we netted several approaching 20 inches.  We caught all brown trout and fished a variety of flies.  We probably caught the most on the famous red ass (imported from Arkansas where it gained fame on the Little Red River), other soft hackles, and pheasant tails.  Typically they are taking small flies size 18 and 20.  As we approached Grasshopper Creek the front of the boat switched to a hopper and the back of the boat a streamer.  We got several takes on the hopper but no hook ups; caught one nice fish on a streamer.  The Beaverhead has been remarkable all year and the great fishing is expected to continue throughout the late summer and fall as the fishing pressure is reduced.
