Southwest Montana fly fishing reports

Montana offers the ideal climate for strong and healthy fly fishing trout populations.

Helpful Montana Fishing Information

There are many factors that play key roles in determining the outcome of a day spent on the water chasing trout not only in Southwest Montana, but in trout waters world wide.  Weather, Hatch Charts, and River Flows are the three most common environmental aspects of fishing that most people tend to follow in terms of making their decision on where to fish that particular day.  However, there are other factors that are just as important and play key rolls in whether or not your chosen river will be the river that’s “on fire” that particular day, or be the piece that “just didn’t fish today.”

Moon phases, or lunar cycles, have been followed by saltwater fisherman and hunters for decades.  In the past few years we have learned that the cyclical pattern of the moon also plays a roll in trout fishing as well.

Have you ever had a day where every fish in the river seemed to be eating, and more likely than not CHASING any bug that came close to their feeding lane?  If you have, a big factor in those exciting conditions was related to Barometric Pressure.  Trout have very sensitive lateral lines in which the pressure system either constricts or relaxes blood vessels in their body causing them to “turn off” at times, or send them into a feeding frenzy.

Take a look at theses environmental fishing factors, and see if they can help your success not only in our fishing season here in Montana, but during your season on your home water as well.
